Abstract
Phyletic trends can be accounted for by anagenesis or cladogenesis in conjunction with species selection or effect maroevolution. Data from the fossil record support anagenesis, involving single ancestor-descendent relationships, rather than cladogenesis as the normal or dominant pattern. Examples are given from fossil invertebrates of paedomorphosis and peramorphosis, of which the former appears to predominate.
