Abstract

A description is given of a new euryhaline free-living amoebo-flagellate, Heteramoeba clara n. gen. n. sp., whose flagellate stage resembles Heterochromonas globosa Skuja. Culture experiments are described providing evidence of a two-type mating system among clones of flagellates, leading to amoeba formation. The taxonomic position of Heteramoeba is discussed in relation to Naegleria, Tetramitus and Heterochromonas.
