For more than a decade, the concept of has been very popular when it comes to describing processes of statebuilding in early modern times. Schennach's contribution outlines the genesis of this theoretical concept inspired by research activities on early modern good police (guie Policey), by discussions on the myth of absolutism and by new cultural history. The paper illustrates potentials and deficits of this approach by using the example of the so-called Kammerprokurator in the Austrian Hereditary Lands. It can be shown that the concept of has its limits, tends to blend out the repressive aspects of ruling in early modern times. It can only be seen as complementary to works which analyse the development of administrad ve and constitutional structures in the long run.
