Abstract

Herpes simplex encephalitis is one of the most common and serious encephalitides of immunocompetent adults. If left untreated, this infection is associated with high morbidity and mortality (70% in untreated patients and 19% in those treated with acyclovir). Current diagnosis relies on cerebrospinal uid examination (CSF) revealing positive results for polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a test with 98% sensitivity and 94% specicity.(1)
