Abstract
To the Editor.— We wish to comment on herpes dating services, a new social phenomenon that has recently emerged in many large cities (eg, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles). In our opinion, such services are not only unnecessary, but they actually may be detrimental from both medical and psychosocial points of view. Recent surveys have shown that genital herpes simplex infections may be caused by either of the two major serotypes of herpes simplex virus (type 1 and type 2). 1 Type 2 genital first infections are followed by recurrent episodes in about 60% of cases as compared with the 14% recurrence rate after type 1 virus caused first genital infections. 2 By means of restriction endonuclease analysis, it further has been shown that within each of the two major serotypes, numerous genetically different strains exist.
