Abstract

Is the hero role the best self-image for surgeons in the modern world? As Donald Berwick, founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, has pointed out, health care is an exercise in interdependency, not personal heroism. In my president’s address to the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, I examine the role of the surgeon as hero and citizen.
