Abstract

Conor Cruise O’Brien has been active in national and international politics for over 20 years as well as pursuing careers in teaching and writing. He was the United Nations representative in the Congo when Katanga tried to secede. In the early 1970s, back in his native Ireland, he was embroiled in the continuing controversy concerning events in Northern Ireland, both as a member of the Irish parliament and as a government minister. Defeated in the 1974 elections Dr. O’Brien became editor-in-chief of The Observer in London.
