Abstract

A brief consideration has been given to the clinical problems of both inguinal and umbilical hernias, stressing that a hydrocele is in truth a hernia-hydrocele combination and that most true umbilical hernias close spontaneously. We believe that an aggressive approach to inguinal hernias is indicated, with operative intervention taking place when the diagnosis has been made rather than waiting until the child is some years of age. We believe that a conservative approach should be followed with regard to umbilical hernias. Few operations should be performed before the age of two years and only if selected indications for surgery exist after that age.
