Abstract

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) will transform the healthcare industry, and enable the emergence of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). In this paper, we present and analyze HERMIT, a benchmark suite for the IoMT. The goal of HERMIT is to facilitate research into new microarchitectures and optimizations that will enable efficient execution of emerging IoMT applications. HERMIT comprises of applications spanning various domains in the healthcare industry, including computerized tomography scan, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, implantable heart monitors, wearable devices. HERMIT also includes supplementary applications for security and data compression. We analyze HERMIT on an IoT prototyping platform to derive insights into IoMT applications’ compute and memory characteristics. We also compare HERMIT to three commonly used benchmark suites: 1) MiBench; 2) SPEC CPU2006; and 3) PARSEC, and show that IoMT applications’ characteristics differ from existing benchmarks. Our results motivate the need for a new benchmark suite to enable IoMT-targeted microarchitecture research.
