L'article decrit le riche arriere-plan de la theologie catholique du XIX e siecle en Allemagne, la restauration ultramontaine qui a eu lieu ainsi que le contexte du revivalisme catholique posterieur a la periode du Kulturkampf et la reaction anti-moderniste finale. Cela permet de comprendre pourquoi Herman Schell etait a ce moment une figure suspecte mais aussi une figure importante dans le developpement de la theologie catholique contemporaine
