not an introspective person. I don't sit down and try to analyze my motives or where I've been or where I'm going. I've simply enjoyed doing research, enjoyed making discoveries, enjoyed publishing papers that other people read and quote. Really, I've never worried about the ultimate goal. Maybe not. But neither has he just taken a random walk through life. In fact, his approach to research has been described as unusually logical and systematic. Herbert C. Brown, recently retired from Purdue University, can look back upon a long and productive career as an organic chemist. As one measure of his accomplishments, he's just been chosen to receive the 1981 Priestley Medal, the American Chemical Society's most prestigious award.
