Abstract

Heptanone (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 110–43-0) is a ketone used as an industrial solvent and flavor ingredient in foods. It is also used as a fragrance ingredient in creams, lotions, perfume, soaps, and detergents. Honeybees secrete 2-heptanone from their mandibular glands when they bite. In hives, it acts as an alarm pheromone to recruit guards for protection and also acts as a chemical marker. Acts as an anesthetic in small arthropods, such as wax moth larva and Varroa mites that are paralyzed after a honeybee bite. In animals, it is secreted as a pheromone. Inhalation at higher concentration causes central nervous system depression. Vapor/liquid contact irritates the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. It can be absorbed into the bloodstream after ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. 2-Heptanone is known to potentiate the nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic effects of halogenated hydrocarbons. It is noncarcinogenic but is a weak mutagenic agent.
