Abstract

The regulation of iron homeostasis is controlled to a large extent by the iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin. Hepcidin is secreted from the liver in situations of iron overload and acts to reduce levels of iron in the circulation by reducing iron release from cells by binding to the iron exporter ferroportin, inducing its internalization and degradation.
