Abstract
The setting is a 900 bed teaching institution with a Cardiovascular Center that houses 40 inpatient beds and 8 operating rooms. Approximately 300 cardiac procedures are performed per year, including heart transplants and left ventricular device procedures (LVAD). In 2009 two patients were identified as having acute HCV status post LVAD procedure, with an unexplainable source. There are reports in the literature of iatrogenic acquisition of HCV in patients, therefore an investigation was launched.
