Abstract

Heart donor availability is limited. Various options have been proposed to expand the donor pool, including candidate vaccination to permit use of Hepatitis B (Hep B) positive donors. There are approximately 1.25 million carriers of the Hepatitis B virus in the United States. In order to include HepBsAg positive transplant donors, we initiated a protocol of routine vaccination against hepatitis B at the time of transplant evaluation. Seroconversion rates following vaccination in the general population are 95%, 90%, 85%, 70%, and 50% in the 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, and over 59 year old age groups respectively. Seroconversion rates in patients with end-stage heart failure are not known.
