Abstract

Heparin, a glycosaminoglycan, has historically been used in oocyte retrieval flush media for follicular aspirates to prevent the formation of clots that might hinder the identification and isolation of oocytes by embryologists.1 However, optimal follicle aspiration media has not been definitively established and there is no globally accepted formulation in regard to heparin.2-3 In 2018, a heparin shortage significantly reduced supply.4 Switching to a heparin-free flush media provided opportunity for fertility centers using heparin flush media to reduce costs and avoid unnecessary exposure of oocytes to a chemical, but how did it impact oocyte retrieval outcomes?
