Abstract
This chapter provides an account of Henry Hexham's life and work. It also offers a reflection on his role as translator in relation to his other activities as a military man, a writer and lexicographer. Besides being a soldier, Hexham was a writer, first and foremost on military affairs. He has been referred to as the historian of the Dutch wars, and not without reason, for he published a series of well-written and reliable, if on occasion gruesome eye-witness accounts of the battles he had participated in wars. Hexham was also an active translator. The chapter explains the impact of his translations. The fact that quite a few of his publications were regularly reprinted, can be seen as an indication of their success in mediating information, knowledge and ideas between Britain and the Netherlands.
