Abstract

Abstract This revised census of original copies of The Pencil of Nature updates the one first published in the 1989 Anniversary Facsimile.1 That enumeration represented the most complete assessment of The Pencil ever undertaken. Perhaps even more importantly than tracing long-forgotten copies, the census served to define just what was an authentic Pencil of Nature, as originally issued by Talbot. Past assessments of this seminal publication were often generalized from the attributes of a single copy; in many cases that copy was demonstrated to have been exceptional.
