Abstract

Summary 1. A case of hemorrhagic infarction, without renal vascular thrombosis, of the right kidney in an 8-day-old male infant who survived following prompt nephrectomy is presented. 2. It is thought that this representsthe fourth reported case in which the patient survived following surgery. 3. Features in the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease are discussed. 4. Attention is called to the possibilityof the occurrence of lower nephron nephrosis in the remaining kidney following removal of the other infarcted and/or thrombotic one. 5. A plea is made for physicians tofrequently note the urinary output, to examine the urine, and to perform frequent abdominal examinations for the detection of renal masses in infants ill with infections, diarrhea, dehydration, and shock. Thus, many patients with unilateral renal infarction and thrombosis that otherwise would be overlooked will be saved by early recognition and prompt nephrectomy.
