Abstract

Subarachnoid hemorrhage is defined as the extravasation of blood in the subarachnoid space. The rupture of a saccular aneurysm is the most significant cause. The condition has its highest incidence between 40 and 60 years of age. Its mortality reaches up to 30% in the first month, even with current measures and advances in countries with high per capita income. The condition generates sequela in up to 60% of patients who experience it and, most importantly, generates dependence in 40% of survivors. Over the course of this chapter, we will review the main risk factors, etiopathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostic algorithms and the therapy strategies that are currently available for addressing this severe disease.
