Abstract

We present the results of a forensic autopsy in a preterm newborn in whom a germinal matrix haemorrhage (4th degree) (GMH) and signs of a head trauma were observed. Death was caused by a prematurity respiratory depression and brain haemorrhage. We also performed a literature review on the main causes, prognosis and natural course of GMH. GMH is mainly a consequence of physiological immaturity and respiratory distress. It is suggested that in this case head trauma was not a main factor affecting the natural course of the germinal matrix haemorrhage and was not the main cause of death of the newborn.
