Abstract

Abstract 1. 1. Electrophoretic and isoelectric focusing methods were utilized to differentiate two species of Italian freshwater barbs (Barbus barbus plebejus and B. meridionalis). 2. 2. Two protein systems were studied, hemoglobins and soluble eye lens proteins. 3. 3. Multiple and species-specific electrophoretic hemoglobin patterns were found. Both techniques revealed species-specific patterns in eye lens proteins. 4. 4. As they exhibit different patterns in the two species, these systems permit species identification. 5. 5. Comparison of the two protein system patterns in the two species clearly showed their relative taxonomic distance, and thus the early detachment of these species from a presumptive common ancestral stock.
