Abstract

A brief historical review of the major developments for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is given, followed by several observations on present CRRT membrane design characteristics and transport performance. It is projected that evolution of the CRRT methodology will eventually lead to the “holy grail” of artificial kidney therapy, namely, a continuously operating wearable device.
