Abstract

Better understanding of the mechanism of erection based on hemodynamics and the pharmacological action of intracavernosal agents have resulted in more insight into the diagnosis of various erectile disorders. Further experience with other diagnostic tests has led to the treatment of patients with erectile dysfunction by self-injection, venous ligation, arterial revascularization and other non-surgical means such as sexual counselling, oral and injectable medical therapy and external vacuum devices. This paper discusses the efficacy and role of these alternatives to the penile prosthesis.
