Abstract

SummaryTransplantation of a normal kidney to a renal hypertensive rat produced a decrease in mean arterial pressure of 171 to 138 mmHg and a decrease in cardiac output from 258.9 to 167.3 ml/kg/min. There was no significant change in calculated total peripheral resistance or in regional vascular resistance in the perfused hind leg. The decrease in mean arterial pressure is caused by a decrease in cardiac output resulting from a decrease in stroke volume. Kidney transplantation to a normal rat elicits a lesser decrease in mean arterial pressure, which is caused by a decrease in both cardiac output and in total peripheral resistance.
