Abstract

Inhalation of spirits of ammonia causes a reflex constriction of resistance blood vessels in the limbs, an increase in systemic arterial blood pressure and a reflex constriction of the capacitance vessels—all of which serve to raise cardiac filling pressure. These hemodynamic effects provide ample reason for the effectiveness of this traditional treatment for the common faint.
