Abstract

I N PREVIOUS reports [1-3] we have emphasized that artificial pacing of the right ventricle in patients with complete heart block resulted in a significant increase in cardiac output and improvement in other parameters of ventricular function . This study was designed in order (1) to study the contribution of atrial systole to cardiac function in normal human subjects and in patients with heart disease ; (2) to define the influence of variations in stroke volume in the regulation of cardiac output at a fixed and variable ventricular rate in normal and abnormal hearts ; and (3) to study the effect of exercise on cardiac function at a fixed atrial and a fixed ventricular rate .
