Abstract

By delineating the hemodynamic characteristics of various forms of hypertension, human and animal studies of cardiac output, vascular resistance, and blood viscosity in hypertensive disease are pointing the way toward more specific antihypertensive chemotherapy. Such studies provide a rational basis for the use of adrenergic-blocking and other drugs, singly or in combination, to achieve specific effects.
