Abstract

Endobiliary stents are important to palliative management of malignant biliary obstruction in patients with unresectable carcinoma of the head of the pancreas. Initially only polyethylene stents were used for this purpose. These stents have a relatively short functional span before stent occlusion occurs. This led to the development of metallic endobiliary stents, and the recommendation that these be used to treat patients whose life expectancy is believed to be longer than 6 months.1 We treated a patient with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas with portal vein and common bile duct obstruction.
