Abstract

T HE WORKS OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY were first published in the Soviet Union in I934. In the following five years, through I939, his short stories, the novels The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, To Have and Have Not, and the play The Fifth Column, were published. His popularity was immediate and impressive. In the mid-thirties, International Literature, a monthly journal, asked Soviet writers in a questionnaire which contemporary authors they considered to be the most significant. Hemingway ranked first in almost all of the replies.'
