Abstract

Imidazole compounds form hemichromes in borate buffer solution (pH 8.5) of hemin in the following order of increasing affinity: histidine, carnosine, 1-methylhistidine, anserine, histidylhistidine, imidazole. Hemochromes are formed, with increasing affinity, by histidine, carnosine, histamine, imidazole, anserine, 1-methylhistidine, histidylhistidine. Under the conditions used, nicotinamide did not form a hemichrome but formed a hemochrome at lower concentrations than did any of the imidazole compounds. No evidence was obtained of hemichrome or hemochrome formation with myoglobin and any of the imidazole amino acids or peptides, but imidazole formed a hemichrome, and nicotinamide a hemochrome after denaturation.
