Abstract

Drs Nathan and Oski published the first edition of Hematology of Infancy and Childhood in 1974. The intent was to present the problems of pediatric hematology in terms of the most recent advances in cell and molecular biology. The book was unique in its approach and sophistication and became an important reference for specialists in pediatric hematology-oncology. The new edition of Hematology of Infancy and Childhood has been expanded to encompass the latest advances in the basic science areas of hematology during the past seven years. The editors wisely have divided the text into two volumes because of the expansion. They have enlisted an impressive array of authors for the various chapters that make up these two volumes. Volume 1 contains chapters entitled Historical Perspective, Hematologic Disorders of the Fetus and Newborn, Bone Marrow Failure, Anemias: Disorders of Red Cell Structure and Function, and Anemias: Disorders of Hemoglobin.
