Abstract

The purposes of this article are to discuss the concept of bone marrow transplantation, to describe the manner in which it is carried out at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, to describe the role that the hematology laboratory plays as an integral part of the transplant unit, to summarize the procedures and techniques used, and to discuss the hematologic findings commonly observed in patients who undergo this therapy.
