Abstract

Hemangioma of the thyroid gland is very uncommon and also recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis caused by benign thyroid disease is rarely seen. This paper presents a case of hemangioma of the thyroid with vocal cord paralysis in addition to the previous 3 cases we experienced and a review of the literature.A 64-year-old woman complained of a tumor on the anterior neck, hoarseness and effort dyspnea. A fist-sized tumor was palpabled in the right lobe with limitation of mobility. The laryngeal scopic findings revealed the recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis. On suspicion of thyroid carcinoma, right hemithyroidectomy was performed. The resected tumor was 7.2×6×4 cm (168 g) and the cut surface showed the appearance of solid parts and vascular spaces within coagula in the thick fibrous capsule. It was histologically diagnosed as cavernous hemangioma of the thyroid. Vocal cord paralysis completely healed after operation. Seventeen cases of thyroid hemangioma including this case have been reported in the world literature and this patient is the second case in association with vocal cord paralysis.
