Abstract

While not all bee diseases are accompanied by a foul smell, a strange foul smell coming from a bee hive probably indicates a serious problem. This article describes the investigation of such a hive and the steps to be taken following detection of either European foulbrood or American foulbrood, including informing the local bee inspector or Defra, and practical management. It is important that affected hives are not treated with antibiotics in initial management; use of oxytetracycline may be authorised by the Defra inspector on rare occasions for treatment of European foulbrood.
