Abstract

(Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand. 2018;97:709–716) HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) is a rare disorder and is currently considered a form of severe preeclampsia. There may be specific risk factors for HELLP syndrome that differ from those for other forms of preeclampsia. In addition, the risk factors for HELLP syndrome may vary between the first and second pregnancies. Currently, population-based data on HELLP syndrome are limited. This study aimed to use a national birth registry to estimate the risks of developing HELLP syndrome in first and second pregnancies based on the presence of potential risk factors. In addition, the effect of adverse outcomes in the first pregnancy on the risk of HELLP syndrome in the second pregnancy was evaluated.
