Abstract

As 2015 begins, there are many issues that vie for our attention and call for collective action to influence policies and treatment processes that impact those who are vulnerable and marginalized in U.S. society as well as globally. For example, 50 years after the War on Poverty began, it persists and is a continuous threat for too many—inequity that crosses all ages, races, and nations (Blitz, Kida, Gresham, & Bronstein, 2013; Brisson, Roll, & East, 2009; Fogel, 2007; Hong & Wernet, 2007; Rank & Williams, 2010; Twill & Fisher, 2010). Violence—all kinds of cruelty and those acts that inspire terror—and the complex emotions associated with being fearful, defensive, and alone seem to have spread into our daily lives no matter where one lives (Androff, 2012; Vincent, 2009).
