Abstract

A series of (Gd,A)2(Zr,B)2O7 samples bearing various amounts of complex TRPO waste (0, 25 and 40 wt%) were irradiated with 0.5 MeV He2+ ions at fluences ranging from 1 × 1014 to 1 × 1017 ions/cm2. All the irradiated samples transformed from pyrochlore to disordered fluorite structure with micro-swelling. The irradiation tolerance of the (Gd,A)2(Zr,B)2O7 solid solutions weakened with increased TRPO waste content. However, no obvious amorphization was observed even in ceramics bearing the highest amount of TRPO waste. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the vibration frequencies of the atomic bonds changed, and the bands became broader due to irradiation induced disorder.
