Abstract

The paper deals with the excitation of helium in the upper atmosphere. Emission of λ10830 Å is observed only in the sunlit atmosphere and appears to be due to fluorescence. The excitation of the helium emission, λ10830 Å, essentially depends on ultra-violet solar radiation with λ < 304 Å and λ584 Å. This paper examines the varieties of this radiation.
