Abstract

Comparisons of gut tissue microsomal activity of susceptible corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), and susceptible and resistant tobacco budworm, H. virescens (F.), were made on the bases of per larva, per gram of larva, and per milligram of microsomal protein. No single base of expression explained all of the observed insecticide tolerance patterns. Resistant budworms showed elevated total microsomal activity with a corresponding increase in microsomal protein over the susceptible strain while the specific activity remained the same. Lower total and specific activity were recorded for the corn earworm, indicatmg different mechanisms of insecticide tolerance between the 3 strains.
