Abstract
Ernst Thälmann's childhood was normal for the most part. The chapter includes passages from Thälmann's autobiography, “Lebenslauf,” One of these passages describes a socialist rally Thälmann attended when he was sixteen; Thälmann considered this moment to be a turning point in his intellectual and moral development. The chapter describes various incidents from Thälmann's adolescence in Hamburg and his involvement with workers’ unions. Thälmann visited the United States in his twenties and was drafted to fight for Germany in the Great War soon after. This chapter focuses heavily on Thälmann's interest in socialism and his rejection of religion. It also details his ascent to political power and his viewpoints. The chapter explains events such as the “German October” and the Moscow meetings and describes Thälmann's involvement with the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). The conflict between the KPD and the Nazi party is explained and analyzed. Thälmann runs against Hitler and von Hindenburg in the 1932 presidential election and is imprisoned by Hitler.
