Abstract

Height, weight, height velocity and weight velocity of a homogenous group of children from birth up to 18 months of age has been presented. All children were from a Bengali Hindu, low socio-economic community residing in a slum area in Calcutta. The weight pattern was sustained up to 308 days in boys and 336 days in girls after which there was a definite decline. Compared with the Harvard Standard, these children showed a poor growth performance with increase in age. The height pattern compared favourably with the Indian norms and with the British standard. The height and weight velocities showed peak periods at 56 days for both boys and girls.
