Abstract
Screening of newborns for phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism can prevent brain damage and severe intellectual impairment from these conditions. The success of the national programme relies heavily on the input of midwives. This paper reviews the screening programme, with particular emphasis on the stages at which midwives are involved, drawing on the findings of the recent national audit of the programme.
