Abstract
Was the pursuit of pleasure the main impetus behind the establishment of Hasmonean Jericho and were their buildings soon dominated by a lavish pools complex dedicated to leisure and entertainment? The evidence suggests that the Hasmonean's predominant concern was in establishing a profitable agriculture-based industry, that the palace was an administrative centre concerned more with self-sufficiency than a luxurious lifestyle, and that the well-planned pools complex is illusory.
