Abstract

AbstractTabulated data on the hectareage and number of olive trees worldwide; the global olive oil production; the olive oil production in the Mediterranean; and the EU production of olive oil are provided. There is a variety of table olives (whole, pitted, sliced, stuffed) and, as observed in the case of olive oil, the production of table olives fluctuates from year to year, due to both weather conditions and the alternate bearing habit of olive trees. When the price of olives for the production of table olives is low, part of the yield is used for oil production. The EU is the largest table olive producer (40%), others being Turkey (13%), the USA (10%), Morocco (8%), Syria (7%) and Egypt (4%).
