Abstract

Mustafa Natshe, former acting mayor of the West Bank town of Hebron, was dismissed by the Israeli authorities inJuly I983 after the fatal stabbing in Hebron market of a recent immigrant, Aharon Gross, from the settlement of Kiryat Arba. Natshe's predecessor, Fahd al-Qawasmeh, elected mayor in 1976, was similarly dismissed by the Israeli authorities and deported in May I980, following an attack against Jewish settlers in Hebron which left six dead and I 6 injured. The dismissal of Natshe left the way open for the occupation authorities to replace him with their own appointee, Shemesh Zamir, an officer of the Israel Defense Forces. Mustafa Natshe was interviewed in Hebron in September I983.
