Abstract

We discuss heavy-ion grazing collisions at intermediate energies (E/A ≈ 50 – 1000 MeV) within a model a la Glauber based on microscopic nucleon-nucleon collisions in the eikonal limit. Applications n;o elastic and inelastic scattering processes are presented. The model can also be used to determine microscopic heavy-ion optical potentials in this energy range. In addition to the “bare” elastic potential, one also obtains the dynamical contribution arising from the coupling to the excited channels. At variance with the standard behaviour characterizing the energy range around the Coulomb barrier, at high bombarding energies all terms of the optical potentials are complex functions, and their energy dependence as well as the balance between real and imaginary parts are essentially governed by the behaviour of the microscopic nucleon-nucleon scattering at the corresponding energy. Examples of predicted optical potentials at different energies are presented.
