Abstract
Four generic reactor‐plant concepts were included in the Heavy Ion Fusion Systems Assessment to provide a wide range of pulse‐repetition‐rate/target‐yield capability–1 to 20 Hz/150 to 3000 MJ. This permitted exploration of the impact on heavy‐ion fusion cost o electricity (COE) of the repetition‐rate and efficiency advantages of induction linacs relative to other ICF drivers. Minimum COE results are encouraging–from 55 to 75 mills/kWh for 1000‐MWe plants to <45 mills/kWh for 1500 MWe. HIF with induction‐linac drivers can compete using more than one reactor plant concept. Minimum COE corresponds to reactor repetition rates <10 Hz for 1000‐MWe, one‐reactor plants. Contrary to pre‐HIFSA expectations, large pulse repetition rates are optimum only for very large plants. COE’s are within 5% of minimum COE over wide ranges of repetition rate and target yield. Cost or technological problems in one part of plant parameter space need not be fatal for HIF because of the large low‐COE parameter space.
