Abstract
i) It was seen that the heavy snow fall in Japan occured frequently at the western sides of the mountains near the Japan Sea and there were most frequently in the southpart of Niigata district and all Toyama district.ii) From the present researches, it was found that the high speed of NW wind and vertical instability of airmass had the strong influence on the immediate cause of heavy snow fall.iii) When the cold cores in westerly waves, approached to Japan, NW monsoon developed and heavy snow fell over some parts of those lands. It was found that, when the temperature of 500 mb height at Lat. 40° N was below -35°C, the heavy snow fell.
