Abstract

Samples of the feather moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. and the underlying soil were collected from 100 sites in NW Ontario, Canada, and analyzed for the heavy metals Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. Soil pH, soil loss on ignition and tree cover were also measured. Metal concentrations in the moss were generally lower than in the underlying soil. Concentrations of all metals except Mn in the moss were significantly intercorrelated. Concentrations of all metals except Mn increased with increasing tree cover, and decreased with increasing distance from Thunder Bay city. Observed ranges of background metal concentrations (ppm, dry wt) in P. schreberi 50 to 200 km from Thunder Bay city were: Cd 0.50-0.64, Cu 6.6-8.8, Fe 690-940, Hg 0.06-0.09, Mn 290-320, Ni 2.0-3.4, Pb 29-31 and Zn 65-71.
